For the first time since 1962 Phillip Hammond announced the budget on a Monday to avoid clashing with European Union (EU) negotiations. Under pressure to support the ‘end of austerity’ measures, and in the knowledge that it all might go out of the window in the event of a no-deal Brexit the budget produced a few surprises. Global tech firms were targeted in the form of a new UK digital services tax, whilst a cut in business rates offered help to some independent shops, cafes and pubs. Minimum wages are also to increase and the personal tax allowance will be raised in April 2019.
